This course focuses on the European feminist movement and the emergence of feminism in Greece. It presents the three waves of feminism, the key theories that shaped them, and the major figures who contributed to their development, from Mary Wollstonecraft to Judith Butler. Special attention is given to the relationship between feminism and politics, particularly in the Greek context (e.g., irredentism, “female education,” national education policies). The course also explores specific topics through literary and cinematic texts, such as the representation of the female body in media, social networks, and advertising; the portrayal of women in pop culture and performance art; and the woman as writer, creator, or political figure. Topics also include gender-based violence, the #MeToo movement, LGBTQI+ identities and issues of discrimination based on gender.
